Maybe upgrade these forums to phpbb version 3.something?

I run some WoW gaming forums on phpbb3 and never have any spam issues, they haven't figured out a good way around the image verification yet

Sound like a very good idea!
Got sick and tired seeing the last (current) major spam attack. It seems to cover most sub forums with multiple, repetitive, postings.

Next Spammer:

profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=21430

It seems, that for the future of this forum, it is necessary to upgrade to the newest software available. The spam level has risen beyond any reasonable level.
And a small hint how to do human verification - use pictures of animals for example... Not CAPCHA's.

Hello everyone!

It seems, that we should do something to stop this spam-A-Lot....
I suggest, that we close new registrations for now to kill the spammers until the solution is found to end the horror...

I agree. It is better to do something compared to do nothing.

Real new user are not getting a good impression now anyway... More than two full pages of spam titles. Ugh! Haven't seen other user forums comming close to this kind of mess.

Hello Kofax?
Upgrade the forum software and stop new users a while until you get things up and going with a new routine and new software.
If some sub manager somwehere thinks that the number of 'visits' from these spam attacks is a good thing, can someone please tell that this is not really so?
If you make it idiot-proof, someone will make a better idiot.

Postby cluesch » Wed Dec 10, 2008 4:56 am

Well, it looks like nobody cleaned the forum for two days or so, there are a couple messages:

viewtopic.php?t=15336
viewtopic.php?t=15335
viewtopic.php?t=15334

viewtopic.php?t=15280

viewtopic.php?t=15269

And so on....

Again massive spam attack. It seems, that nobody cares.... Please stop it. Hint for admins - please update the registration procedure, so it will be possible make difference between robots and humans. Use a third word from a KC manual as a confirmation keyword.... Please do something...
If anybody looks at the registred user count - it's like a clock.... new spammers are added constanty.

In a different forum we where having some serious problems with spam. Captcha wasn't doing the job. We ditched Captcha and put in a simple question. One that would easily be answered by most and found with a google search for the rest. (What color is the white house? What is the acronym for Virtual Rescan?) That put a halt to things.

It wasn't the difficulty of the question, it's just the registration procedure was no longer "standard" and the spammer's automated scripts written for that Forum Software failed. The spammers are only interested in numbers - as many forums as possible. So by making it non-standard, they no longer bothered us.
