VRS 4.10 Service pack 2 includes support for the TIFF Technical Note 2 format for embedding JPEG compressed data in TIFF files. Once the service pack is installed, you have the ability to read files in the TIFF Technical Note 2 format.

To write to files in this format, it is necessary to add the following entry to the Defaults section of the kofax200.ini file in your VRS installation:
TIFF_JPEG_Style=2

I tired that without success... VCDemo so far only writes TIFF 6.0 original spec compressed images (compression type 6), but no TTN#2 format files.

What does one exactly have to do?

I installed VRS 4.1 Update 2, my version is now 4.10.088, I added the line
Code: Select all
TIFF_JPEG_Style=2
to the file C:\WINDOWS\kofax200.ini but that didn't help, setting the storage format to TIFF/TIFF2 or TIFF/JPEG generates only old-style JPEG compressed images.

Because SP2 is now Vista compatible, the Kofax200.ini has moved locations to C:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Kofax\VRS

Do the same thing you did to the old kofax200.ini; add Tiff_JPEG_Style=2 to the Defaults section.

Make sure VRS is not running while doing this.

After scanning, you can test with applications such as Microsoft Office Imaging to verify the changes were successful.

~Hope this helps

Work like a charm! Thanks a lot.

But Documentation? Is this mentioned somewhere? I'm pretty sure I read the Relase Notes front to back, but cannot recall that anyhting was mentioned.

Hello Dietmar,
the KB Article you referenced is the old whitepaper, which says why Kofax doesn't support TTN2 style compression, only old-style, which is so well defined that Kofax did TIFF_JPEG_Style=1 to support FileNet's slighlty different interpretation of old-style JPEG compression.

What we're talking here about is how to enable TTN2 "new-style" JPEG Compression, which is done simply enough by applying VRS 4.1SP2 and setting TIFF_JPEG_Style=2 in Kofax200.ini. But what about documenting the changed locations of Kofax200.ini, this is the part which is not mentioned anywhere but here, as far as I know.

Cheers,

Cool! Any way to do this with Ascent Capture's Color TIFFs?

It appears that adding the TIFF_JPEG_Style=2 section to the .ini file does fix the issue of opening the images, in a windows program, on a Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 machine. I have found, however, that they still will not open on a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 machine. Any ideas?

I have found though use that Tech Note 2 produced by VRS 4.5 is different from that produced by VRS Elite. I'm not sure why. The Elite version proved compatable with somethings that VRS 4.5's was not.
